3AM’s music transcends any one genre. High energy original material, flowing improvisations and choice covers make each show a celebration; a chance to make music that stays with the audience long after the show is over.
About seven years ago, Goodwin and Styles met at an open mic night at Bentz Street Raw Bar and Styles pointed out that the two of them should make music together, that it would work. Before moving toFrederick, lead guitarist and vocalist Goodwin played with the Burlington-based Augusta Brown, touring the East Coast. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Styles developed his sound from years of playing R&B and gospel. Styles had never listened to jam band music, let alone play in one. They collaborated and formed 3AM, and quickly gained a local following. When the city ofFrederick held the first ever Alive at Five concert to celebrate the opening of Carroll Creek, 3AM was the headlining band.
Mazzi, meanwhile, had played with the Freddie Long Band for 2 1/2 years before joining Goodwin and Styles after the departure of their original Bass player. The three gelled as a unit quickly. They played as a trio for about three years before bringing on the classically-trained Chris Zebal on keys and organ. Having fronted the fusion band Vahana in the Baltimore area before moving to Frederick, the chemistry was immediately apparent after Goodwin asked him to sit in on a few rehearsals. The new quartet went into the studio in the Spring of 2010 and recorded On The Edge, debuting the new album at a CD release party at Bushwaller’s in Downtown Frederick. They continue to gain new fans and discover new musical ground at each live performance.
